Whether this is your first year decorating a chair or you’re a returning JBDTC partner, a little planning goes a long way. We’ve gathered answers to the most common questions about designing, building, lighting and installing your display.
Not at all. Great chairs come from great ideas. We encourage you to involve artists, designers, builders, employees, friends or anyone who enjoys creating.

Start with an idea and develop a plan before you build. Think about your theme, materials, lighting and how everything will come together on installation day.

Very! Originality and craftsmanship are what make the exhibit special. Think beyond simply decorating the chair—the lifeguard chair can become part of a much bigger idea.

Each chair sits within a 15-foot display area, with a recommended maximum design/build footprint of approximately 12' x 12'.

Yes. Many of our most memorable displays transform the area around the chair as part of the overall concept. Just stay within the designated display space.

JBDTC event organizers require all first-time decorators attend at least two of the five workshop provided by the design build support team. Once a decorator is familiar with chair decorating process attendance is not required.

The greatest challenge decorators face is designing a constructing a display that can be sustained out in the oceanfront park elements over the span of five weeks. Materials are very important and a list of recommended items can be shared during decorator workshops.

Decorators are responsible for design, construction and maintenance of their displays throughout the five weeks that JBDTC exhibit is in the public space. Decorators are also responsible for clearing all materials from site during strike out. No materials can be thrown in public dumpsters and SITAA cannot store props.

There is no average cost for decorating a chair however your display should always reflect well on the company or organizations brand. The lower end of an investment in decorating materials should not be less than $500 . Creativity, photo-op friendly, and interactivity is best.

JBDTC organizers will be providing large signage for each chair site and decorators do not need to spend too much effort on additional logo signage. It is recommended that a focus is placed on storytelling and letting the lights, design, and creativity promote brand.
